The Otago University Rowing University Games season of 2012 ended with great success over the Easter weekend recently. With only a short few weeks to build up to the great event everyone got stuck into the early morning training, got out in the eights and got the job done. The training paid off with Otago again claiming the overall winners tropy 'The Ashes' by a comfortable margin.

The Championship 8s, which compete over the unique 3.2km (2 mile) distance raced on the Waimakariri river. The men were first up and after having a good crack and pushing the whole way, the Otago men’s crew were simply out rowed by a better Auckland University crew. The results. 1. Auckland 2. Otago 3. Canterbury. Otago coming 2nd in the mens event for the 3rd year running and the shield with a 4th holder in as many years. To the women and the Otago crew went out strong and grabbed the lead and rowed home looking quite comfortable. This was a great result and practice as this crew is flying to Washington USA later this month to compete. The womens race finishe 1. Otago 2. Auckland 3. Canterbury.

Saturday morning saw racing taking place on Lake Hood, with races from Singles to Eights involving everyone from Novice’s to Championship rowers. This was the first chance which the Novices were able to get out on the water and put there new rowing skills to the test. The novices raced hard and well all through out the day, putting in a fanatic effort and producing some great results.

The weather deteriorated which made racing a little harder, rowing into a strong head wind. But everyone was still was able to take the water and race well considering, and even taking many titles and podium finishes.
