University Rowing Champs 2010 - Otago Retain The Ashes!
April 13, 2010
With the conclusion of the 2010 University Rowing Champs Otago has once again come out on top dominating the points and retaining the ashes trophy by a margin of 50 points. Glassy water and sunshine made for brilliant racing on lake Waihola as the univeristies duked it out. Exciting racing across the board made for a great spectacle. Otagos women managed to retain the Tamaki Cup in the championship 8 winning in convincing style. Unfortunately in the mens 8s Otago was beaten by a spirited crew from Canterbury. Canterburys win ends Otagos 8 year winning streak - the longest in the history of the shield.
With the serious stuff over Sundays racing saw mixed crews racing 500m sprints. Otago managed to take out the 'Really Mixed 8s' which consisted of four males and females who were one novice, one tournament class, one intermediate class and one champ class rower. This event saw the introduction of an impressive new trophy that will hopefully become hotly contested in the future.
A big thanks to all the coaches and volunteers who made the event possible and did such a fantastic job.
