New Zealand National Championships 2008
Feb. 27, 2008
The New Zealand National Championships were held last week at Lake Karapiro. OURC walked away from the regatta with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The gold medal winners were Klaasje Galama and Marjolijn Stenneke in the Womens Senior Double and in the Womens Novice Double Genevieve Martin and Fiona Bourke won comfortably but created some tense moments by catching a few crabs right before the line.
Silver went to the combination of Bridget Wright, Klaasje Galama, Amy Grundy and Elyse Fraser in the Womens Senior Quad and also to Amy Grundy and Elyse Fraser in the Womens Club Double.
The bronze medals went to Bridget Wright and Amy Grundy for the Senior Pair and Marjolijn Stenneke in the Senior single.
There were several other great performances including a 4th place by a composite quad which was made up of two OURC rowers (Matthew McGovern and Adam Garden) who combined with two North End rowers (Curtis Bush and Michael Nisbet). Also worth mentioning is Fergus Fauvel who performed admirably in the U21 single making the semi finals despite being a novice.
Special thanks go out to Fergus's mum who provided some fantastic meals for the crews at the champs.
