Otago Bring Home &Quot;Ashes&Quot; At New Zealand University Rowing Championships

May 2, 2014

Otago made the most of home-water advantage as it dominated the New Zealand universities regatta at the weekend.

The men's, women's and overall honours were all claimed by Otago at Lake Waihola.

Otago won the ''ashes'' for the top overall university with 177 points, ahead of Canterbury University (63) and Victoria (39).

Remarkably, it was the 15th consecutive year Otago had claimed overall universities honours.

The Otago men won the Hebberley Shield in the men's champion eight over 3200m for the second consecutive year.

The crew of Bryce Abernethy, Adrian Riepen, Scott Barnsdale, Corey McCaffery, Andrew Potter, Ryan Kelleher, Mark Alm, Elliot Harvey and cox Sachin Arulambalam dominated the race, beating Auckland by four lengths. The Otago No 2 crew finished third.

The Otago women held on to the Tamaki Cup for an eighth consecutive year, winning by a convincing margin over 3200m.

The crew was Holly Greenslade, Ruby Tew, Kirsty Thompson, Holly Fletcher, Hannah Bailey, Morgan Shepherd, Charlotte McIntyre, Lisa Owen and cox Charlotte Kenny. The No 2 crew was second, 30sec behind.

Conditions at Lake Waihola on Saturday were ''absolutely gorgeous'' with hardly a breeze, Otago University Rowing Club director Glen Sinclair said.

Otago rowers Abernethy and Owen were yesterday racing for places in the squad for the world universities regatta. The New Zealand universities squad for the transtasman regatta will be named next week.
